For fellow and future humans of the web

A recent interviewer asked me to share any words I had for “future Women in WordPress”, this lovely subset of human being the focus of the article. In response, a stream of advice flowed out of me that shouldn’t be solely reserved for women, but for all technologists. I hope this post serves to inspire you, whether you’re a veteran in the field or new to the game.

  1. Experiment as much as possible.
  2. Don’t be afraid to break things and learn from your mistakes.
  3. Ask for help when you need it.
  4. If you want to learn programming, study problem solving, data structures, and algorithms. These coding basics will take you far, no matter the language.
  5. Try out new tools and form your own opinion.
  6. Have a healthy concern for technology and methods. Question everything.
  7. It’s important to have a general understanding of various techniques but mastering a subset of skills will be more advantageous to your career.
  8. Just because something is popular, doesn’t mean it’s good.
  9. Always look at the code.
  10. Don’t view your peers as competitors. View them as collaborators.
  11. Never be afraid to ask questions. No one knows everything, not even the experts.
  12. Be a mentor and teacher whenever possible.
  13. Contribute to open-source projects. Help build open and collaborative technology.
  14. Get involved with (or start) a tech community and contribute when you can, but don’t feel like you have to do everything.
  15. Let your voice be heard, especially about things that matter.
  16. Share your work and passions because you never know the life you might inspire.
  17. The people that get up and speak aren’t always the experts. They’re just the ones who said yes.
